Percussion is a team sport. It teaches us how to function as one unit while we each play our individual parts. We move as a unit and play as a unit. This activity allows students to work with peers, challenge themselves, enhance communication and time management skills, while entertaining audiences of all kinds. It teaches to work towards a common goal and push yourself farther than you thought you could go. While playing percussion instruments i.e. snares, tenors and bass drums (otherwise known as a Battery or playing melodic voices in the pit), we as the percussion section are the heartbeat of The Sherando Band. Students in 9th-12th grade will learn to march and play a Field Show telling a story both visually and musically, while competing with other Virginia marching band programs.
The Sherando Percussion Section has been around in many forms since 1993. The program has continued to grow throughout the years. The winter program or Indoor Percussion has won many awards and participate in many events throughout the school year such as:
- Apple Blossom Parade
- Percussion/Band Camp
- Home Football Games
- Winchester & Middletown Holiday Parade
- Marching Band Contest Season
- Concert Season
- Indoor Percussion Season
